In legal work, knowing where the right clause lives is almost as valuable as remembering the clause.
The real skill is knowing when the standard wording fits, when it does not and what has to be escalated.
What Avantia Law did
A December 2024 Legal Futures report describes Avantia Law using an AI agent that James Sutton of Avantia compared to a co-pilot or junior paralegal. It gives paralegals direct access to clauses the firm's lawyers drafted before.
Sutton said AI made training much faster, and that people still review the output and handle clients. The report gives no cost figures and does not show that the tool captures lawyers' tacit reasoning.
What it already gives the business
Avantia started with its own work product, which is a strong choice. An approved clause library supports consistency.
Legal drafting is also a record of trade-offs: negotiating positions, risk tolerance, client context and the reasons an exception was accepted.
The ExValu perspective, a hypothesis
Where a Company Brain could take it next
A carefully governed Company Brain could add a decision layer to approved precedents. A lawyer could record when a clause was rejected, the commercial factor that mattered and the partner sign-off it needed.
The system could then find similar situations, with citations, for a qualified lawyer to assess. It must never stand in for legal advice or reveal one client's confidential position to another.
What an owner and a buyer would look for
For the firm and any future buyer, the indicators that matter are quality, review time, consistency, how well know-how stays in the firm and how much the firm still leans on a few senior lawyers.
Privilege, confidentiality, separated access, clear sources and human approval stay fixed requirements.
